Is Your Homeowners Insurance Family-Friendly?

As families grow, so do their homes and the risks that come with them. Family life adds layers of complexity, and that directly translates to homeowners’ insurance

What once might have been enough coverage for a household of one or two may no longer be enough for a busy household with kids, pets, or even extended family. If it no longer fits your lifestyle, you might find yourself underinsured and financially at risk.

So, is your homeowners’ insurance truly family-friendly, or is it time to rethink your coverage?

Key takeaways

To make sure your homeowners’ insurance is family-friendly, you might need to make the following updates:

  • More personal belongings coverage
  • More liability coverage
  • Coverage for renovations and improvements
  • Advanced safety and security features
  • Insurance for children away at school
  • Insurance for adult children living outside the home
  • Insurance for parents or relatives in the household

More personal belongings coverage

Families tend to accumulate more things, including furniture, electronics, clothing, and sports gear. Over time, all these items add up, and the coverage you had for a smaller household may no longer be enough. “Families often don’t realize how quickly their insurance needs change as their household grows,” says Channelle Cote, an AMF- and RIBO-licensed insurance broker at YouSet. “The coverage that worked five years ago might not be enough today.”

If you haven’t changed your personal belongings coverage limit in a while, you could be underinsured, meaning you’d be responsible for covering the difference between what your insurance pays and what it would cost to replace everything. For example, a young adult with fewer possessions might only need $30,000 in coverage, while a family with kids might need a higher limit up to $100,000.

If you’re unsure about how much coverage you need, a smart first step is to create a home inventory. That way, you aren’t guessing a personal belongings limit–you’re picking one that accurately reflects how much it would cost to replace your belongings in the event they’re destroyed or damaged. Plus, you won’t have to remember everything by memory if you ever have to file a home insurance claim

More liability coverage

With more people under one roof—and more visitors coming and going—the likelihood of an accident (and a potential liability claim) rises. Maybe your kids’ friends are over playing in the backyard, your dog gets a little too excited around guests, or you’re hosting a gathering that doesn’t quite go as planned.

Liability coverage helps protect you if someone is on your property and gets injured or if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property. While $1 million in personal liability coverage is the minimum included in every YouSet homeowners insurance policy, it’s common for families to increase this to $2 million for added peace of mind.

Coverage for renovations

As families grow, their homes tend to expand as well. You might want to finish the basement, add another room, or install a pool. These upgrades make family life more comfortable and fun, but they also affect your home’s rebuild cost and coverage needs. On top of that, families might invest in new appliances, electronics, and furniture, which can increase the total value of what’s inside their home.

That’s why it’s important to review your homeowners’ insurance regularly to ensure your policy aligns with your home’s value, covers your belongings, and protects you from expensive liability claims.

Advanced safety and security features

Installing advanced safety and security features is one of the best ways to protect your home and family. Upgrades like monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, security cameras, smart locks, and surveillance cameras can help reduce the risk of damage, theft, or accidents.

Many insurance providers even offer discounts for homes with monitored fire alarms and security systems. This can be particularly helpful for families on a budget seeking more affordable homeowners’ insurance

Insurance for children away at school

If you have grown children who live out of the home during the school year, they are still considered part of the household. Depending on your insurer and provider, this can mean they’re still covered under your homeowners’ insurance, which generally includes protection for children away at university or college

However, schools with dorms and landlords of off-campus housing usually recommend—if not require—students to have tenant insurance

So, be sure to review the terms and conditions of your homeowners policy to understand what’s covered and where gaps may exist. Oftentimes, a dedicated tenant insurance policy is the best way to ensure your child is fully protected while living away from home.

Insurance for adult children living independently

Once your children officially move out, your homeowners’ insurance no longer extends to them. Their belongings or liability will no longer be covered, which means they will need to get their own renters, condo, or homeowners insurance policy, depending on their living situation.

Insurance for multi-generational households

Multi-generational households are becoming more common in Canada, and that often affects your homeowners’ insurance. If your parents or other relatives live with you permanently and are official members of your household, your policy may extend coverage to them.

That said, extra people on your policy may push your coverage limits beyond what you initially accounted for. If so, you may need to increase your personal belongings limit to account for additional household items and review your liability coverage to ensure everyone is protected.
