Standard auto insurance coverages

Standard auto insurance policies will include a number of different coverages including liability insurance, accident benefits, collision or upset coverage, as well as comprehensive coverage. Learn more about standard auto insurance coverages.

  • Collision and upset
  • Comprehensive excluding collision or upset
  • Deductible
  • Accident benefits

Liability insurance

Liability coverage is mandatory in Canada before hitting the road and is an essential component of auto insurance policies. Liability insurance coverage protects you and other drivers financially in accidents when you are at fault.
However, you don’t necessarily have to be at fault. In Quebec, there is no fault indemnisation. You claim directly with your insurer even if you are not at fault. Liability insurance will cover damages caused to a third party and covers damages, injuries, or losses experienced by you or another driver.

Collision and upset

Collision insurance covers the cost of repair or replacement of your vehicle if you hit another car or object, including a street sign, fire hydrant, light, and more. It also covers you if another car hits you and includes upset. This coverage can also help cover the cost of replacing your vehicle after a collision.

Comprehensive excluding collision or upset

Comprehensive coverage covers all damages to your vehicle other than collision and upset including fire, theft, vandalism and windshield replacement. This coverage protects your vehicle in a number of different scenarios, especially when you are not driving. This can include a rock cracking your windshield, weather-related damage, airborne objects, and more.

Deductible

Your deductible is set by you when you take an automobile insurance policy and it will be the amount that you need to pay to the insurance company in the event of a claim. In some collision claims, you will not be required to pay a deductible if the other person is 100% liable.

Accident benefits

Accident benefits coverage is yet another mandatory requirement in your auto insurance policy (except in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador), covering you and those mentioned on the policy for death, dismemberment, and reimbursement of medical expenses in the event of an automobile insurance claim. It will also cover the insured during an automobile accident even if they are the passenger in another vehicle, a pedestrian or riding a bicycle.
Note: In Ontario, B.C., Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, this coverage is included in your government auto insurance plan, while for the rest of Canada, this coverage must be added to your auto insurance policy.

What happens in case of an accident?

Avatar
The first step is to exchange all relevant information with the other driver. This includes the following:
  • Full name
  • Contact information
  • Insurance company and policy number
  • Driver’s license
  • License plate number

  • Once the information has been exchanged, it is recommended to contact your insurance company as soon as possible and explain the accident.
The insurance company will typically send a claims adjuster to assess the damage, while your insurer determines who was at-fault for the accident. With your claim submitted, simply pay your deductible and repair any damages your car might have following the accident.

    Auto insurance FAQs

    Avatar
We hope we answered all your questions about auto insurance, but if you’re still looking for more information, our frequently asked auto insurance questions have you covered. From what auto insurance covers, to how it is calculated, and what to do after an accident, YouSet has the answers.

Can I insure a car that is not under my name?

No, you cannot insure a vehicle that you do not own, however, the car owner may list you as a principal operator. The most convenient option would be to be added to the car owner’s auto insurance policy, offering you all the essential coverages.

How is my car insurance premium calculated?

Car insurance premiums are dictated by a variety of factors that all impact the final car insurance quote you receive. Common factors include your personal driving record, claims history, the car you drive, the cost to repair your car, usage, your postal code, and how you intend to use your car.
Your location, as well as the make and model of the vehicle are additional factors that go into the calculation of your auto insurance premium.

    Does car insurance cover theft?

Yes, your auto insurance policy can protect you against theft. However, you must have opted in to one of three potential coverage options: Specified perils, comprehensive coverage, and all perils coverage.

In case of an accident how can I determine if I am responsible or not?

Determining which party is at-fault for the accident will ultimately come down to each driver. In most cases, determining if you are responsible for an accident is pretty straight-forward, however, when it is not, your insurer will use the Direct Compensation Agreement (DCA). This document, based on the Highway Safety Code, illustrates all possible accident scenarios to determine which driver was at-fault for the accident, to what degree.

    Why is car insurance mandatory?

Auto insurance policies in Canada are mandatory to protect each and every drive on the road. Auto insurance policies offer you financial protection in the event of an accident or civil liability claim. Rather than paying the full price of repairs, with a car insurance policy, you must only pay your deductible.
Car insurance also offers protection against civil liability, covering any damages, losses, or injuries by another driver or individual. In many ways, auto insurance policies secure your investment, protecting your vehicle in any situation.

Does car insurance cover rental cars?

Yes, auto insurance policies also cover rental cars. When shopping for auto insurance, be sure to add car rental insurance coverage to your policy to be protected. Car rental insurance typically covers  damages to the rental vehicle, as well as damages to another person’s property or vehicle, and injuries.

Does car insurance cover me as an Uber driver?

Using your vehicle for Uber or any other ridesharing service is considered business use and could be covered by your insurer. Be sure to consult your broker to see if they offer this type of product. Alternatively, consult your ride-sharing service and see how you can protect yourself and vehicle while on the road.

Can car insurance be cancelled at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your auto insurance policy at any time, even before the renewal date. Before doing so, however, consult your auto insurer as there might be cancellation fees associated. While you can cancel your auto insurance policy any time, it may not always make financial sense.

Let’s find you the best car insurance in less than 4 minutes.
