Montreal, September 10, 2026 – YouSet, a Canadian digital insurance platform, today released its latest car insurance pricing report, revealing how much Quebec drivers are paying for car insurance in 2026. The report finds that the median cost to insure a vehicle in Quebec is now $114 per month, or $1,368 per year.
That said, the report also highlights just how much car insurance prices can vary across Quebec, with monthly premiums ranging from $30 to $283. Location, vehicle type, driving and insurance history, coverage choices, and deductibles can all have a significant impact on what a driver pays. Quebec’s unique auto insurance system also plays a role, as the SAAQ covers bodily injury, while private insurers provide coverage for property damage and civil liability.
With so many factors influencing the price of a policy, where Quebecers choose to shop can make a meaningful difference.
“Car insurance is becoming more expensive for drivers in Quebec, but our data shows that the rate of increase isn’t the same for everyone, and where you shop matters,” said Xavier Freeman, Chief Executive Officer at YouSet.
“While median premiums across the broader market increased by 8% year over year between 2025 and 2026, YouSet customers saw an increase of just 1%. In other words, when the market moved up, our customers didn’t move up with it to the same extent. That difference is a reflection of what YouSet is built to do: keep looking across the market for better prices year after year, rather than simply passing along the increases.”
Additional key findings from the report include:
- Montreal drivers pay more than the Quebec median for car insurance. The median monthly premium in Montreal was $128, 12% above Quebec’s provincial median of $114.
- Tesla drivers pay the most among the 10 most-quoted car makes. The median monthly premium for a Tesla was $195, compared with $97 for a Toyota.
- Full coverage is the most popular choice among Quebec drivers shopping for private car insurance. Policies combining liability, collision and comprehensive coverage were the most popular option in YouSet’s data, with a median monthly premium of $153, compared with $36 for liability-only coverage.
- New cars cost more to insure than used cars. The median monthly premium for a new vehicle was $152, compared with $94 for a used vehicle, a difference of nearly $700 per year.
The report draws on over 44,000 anonymized car insurance quote applications generated through YouSet between June 18, 2025 and June 18, 2026, not survey responses or hypothetical rate filings. Also, rather than reporting averages, the report uses median premiums alongside the 10th and 90th percentiles, providing a clearer picture of what typical Quebec drivers pay while reducing the influence of unusually high or low quotes.
