Canadians have dozens of companies to choose from when it comes to home, tenant, and condo insurance, and to the average shopper, it can seem as if they’re the same thing, when in fact, they’re not.

A home insurance carrier is the company that underwrites your policy and pays your claims. A separate company, such as an insurance broker, may sell policies on the carrier’s behalf. For example, YouSet is a digital insurance platform and licensed broker that lets you compare quotes from 15+ Canadian insurance carriers and buy your policy online in one place.

To help separate the industry’s leading insurers from the rest, we evaluated Canada’s largest and most established home insurance carriers using publicly verifiable criteria. Factors considered included financial strength ratings, geographic reach, scale, longevity, and corporate structure. The result is this list of the top 10 home insurance carriers in Canada as of July 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Intact: Canada’s largest property and casualty insurer, with roughly $25 billion in annual direct premiums written and a presence in every province and territory.

How we chose the top Canadian home insurance carriers

Since every homeowner values different things, no single insurer is the “best” for everyone. Ranking home insurance carriers at a national scale requires looking beyond prices in a single province, so this list is based on publicly verifiable criteria that apply across Canada and can be independently verified. This includes:

  • Financial strength: Independent ratings from AM Best, the industry standard for measuring an insurer’s ability to pay claims
  • Geographic reach: Carriers actively underwriting policies in most or all provinces and territories, not just licensed to operate there
  • Scale: Assets, premiums written, or policyholder counts, sourced from company filings and rating agency reports
  • Longevity and structure: Founding year, parent company, and related brands
  • Product and coverage availability: Homeowners, condo, and tenant insurance, as well as optional coverage offerings
