1) How to complete a joint report
2) Getting compensation after a road accident
3) Reporting the accident to your insurer
1) How to complete a joint report
If no one was injured, you have to exchange some information with the other people involved in the road accident.
That’s the first step if you want compensation.
Don’t forget to ask for:
- name, license numbers and address of the drivers involved in the accident;
- name and address of each car owner as shown on their vehicle registration certificate (the card or document that says who is the owner of the car);
- license plate number of the cars involved;
- information on each driver’s certificate of insurance.
If you don’t do this, you could get a fine! And no compensation.
After collecting all the information, just fill out a joint report form.
What is it?
It’s a form that describes the accident and identifies the people involved!
Only your insurer can determine whether you were responsible and the amount of your compensation.
2) Getting compensation after a road accident
Is your car damaged? Are you injured? You might receive a compensation!
Your insurance company will determine what part of the accident was your fault and how much compensation you’ll receive for your loss. The amount also depends on what your contract covers and if you have any deductibles.
Are you a Québec resident? The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) compensates you for injuries you suffer in a car accident. Even if you’re responsible for the accident.
When an accident involves a road vehicle, anyone who uses the road, such as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers, are compensated if they’re injured.
3) Reporting the accident to your insurer
Do you plan to pay for the repairs yourself? It doesn’t matter. You must report the accident to your insurance company.
After reporting it, you can still decide to pay for the repairs yourself and don’t ask for any compensation!
Then, why should you report it? Because all road accidents in Québec are in the Automobile Claims Database.
If you don’t report the accident, your insurer can find the other driver’s report.
This could affect whether your insurer will renew your contract or increase the amount you must pay for the insurance!
